FMP- Evaluation

The final outcome of my project I have made a final model of my design which is of a theatre and dance studios space, which originally it was just a theatre space, but then thinking of a theatre by itself was a big scale so I decided to change it slightly by incorporating dance and also it puts in a bit more of me into the project because I used to do contemporary dance.. I’ve completed a sketchbook with my initial ideas and all my research; I’ve also got my presentation sheets. This project has given me the chance to work with programmes and tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketchup, Makeware (3d printing), milling machine, laser cutter; whereas at the beginning of my project I wasn’t thinking of using most of these tools/ machines but as I’ve progressed on with my project my ideas have appeared and changed. In my original I was planning on conducting a questionnaire but as my project changed a little I couldn’t do this. I also wanted to add a terrace to my design but at my current location there is a park right next door so I decided not to add one as by doing this I believe that it would encourage the community to use both of the space’s more.

I have used my time management skills by completing trying to keep update with my blog. I’ve been using my FMP plan to reflect back and see if I’m on track or not and what needs to be done. From my primary research I have been to various exhibitions which have all given me different perspectives and ideas which these have reflected onto my final model design, this has helped me develop my ideas from looking and exploring in different areas of art. I’ve been doing model makings and exploring with material this has given me the chance to explore different material and see how various materials work or do not work together with each other; this has given me the chance to see what could work for my final model making in terms of material, layout and planning. I have taken on board my peers and tutors advice and criticism, and from this point onwards I have developed my ideas and found new directions to continue with my project.

The targets that I have met from my FMP plan are as follows: I've completed my research by visiting galleries/ museums (such as:
Royal Academy of Arts, Hayward Gallery, Architecture foundation, Barbican, British museum, Shakespeare’s Globe, RIBA exhibitions), site visiting as well as visiting the library too. Experimenting with model making as I went along my project, built up my practicality with the materials. I've booked the essential prototyping materials that I'am going to use such as the laser cutter and the miling machine. Then I completed my final model design and presentation sheets.

I have explored with engraving into Perspex acrylic and then painting these, which the paint went inside into the engraved parts this had helped me explore and develop my ideas towards my final. I have made sketches onto Japanese costumes to gain some ideas on how my final idea could be. I’ve also been exploring with Japanese paper arts (origami), which I found challenging this has given me an insight onto what material I could possibly use towards my final model. I have played around with the width and height of my experimentation models.

During my final major project I received a number of advices. After I bought my material I got advice from my tutor about how I could expand my development with the material and how I could plan my final design. The advice I got from my peers was to include something that links to me as well within my design and project and this was to add on a dance studio for my final design rather than to just focus onto a theatre which is usually on a large scale. The advice that I got from my peers helped me look at from a different perspective of how I would use the Perspex material that I’m using.

Next time I would like to experiment with different design areas and incorporate this into my final project, from the exploratory stage to build up my project and to further develop it. I would also like to read/ look into more different resources in order to gain a wide range to background information for my project in order to give me a strong start off point. I’ve developed my experimentation skills within the models that I have made, along with thinking and incorporating my exhibition visits into my models for example two main exhibition visits have really inspired me within my design and development process of my project, these were Sensing spaces exhibition at the Royal Academy of arts and the Martin Creed exhibition and the Hayward Gallery. Finally I’ve matured within making my final model, though the process of making my theatre and dance studio spaces have taken a long time to arrange, scale and one by one put together I’m happy with the final outcome. Next year I’m planning on studying architecture and this project has given me an insight on how to complete a project within a seven week deadline and has shown me to not leave work to last minute and to do it as I go along.

FMP- Final theatre and dance studio's design

I've tried to capture a low angle shoot of the final model to show the further way height of the facade; and to also show the continuity, flow and movement of the whole building. I also like this photograph because it presents you with a shadow on the right hand side of the facade.

I took an landscape photograph of my model, I've capturing light, movement and shadow within my photograph as a way of alternative viewing point and to also allow the audience to capture the main of my concept which was to create movement, flow and for the audience to experience this within the space they inhabit, I've also made my model spacious allowing the audience to experience the space that they are in. I also want them to continue on with the feeling that they capture during the performance to continue on.

Plan view of my model the base of my model is inspired by Japanese theater costume.

Japanese theater costume experimentation to create a facade.

With the photograph angle you could see the layering angle of the clear and white perspex  with architecture figures (1.75) to give the whole building a scale.

I liked the angle of this photograph because I was shinning a torch through the clear acrylic side of the model and I wanted to capture a movement within my model as so does the exterior facade of the theater and dance studio's does so with varied heights of the layered exterior.

FMP- Prototyping

I wanted to also present a landscape of my location in which my design is going to take place at; for this I wanted to use the milling machine, which I have no previous experience with so I got help from the IT technicians on how to use the software and the machine as well.

I imported the saved STL file that I created on SketchUp, to this sotware which is used for the milling machine.

After the first round of milling the edges are looking rough, so I went around for another round of milling just to smooth out the edges.

Approximately 20cm by 15cm

Here I'm using the laser cutter to cut of my perspex acrylic, for my final design.

FMP- Further exploring

I wanted to further explore with making a 3D printed model of my location which my final model was going to take place at, unfortunately due to the high command of people using the 3D printer I didn't get a chance to print this model of my landscape; but I learnt how to use a new 3D software which I have developed myself at.

I needed to add a base to my 3D landscape, to that the machine would have accurate coordinate points.

FMP- Origami

After looking at Japanese theater costumes I've been inspired by the folds, lines and the forms of the costume. This then led me onto looking at Japanese art of paper folding "origami" because this art form explores putting together paper in order to come up with a final outcome. I want to use origami to capture some forms of architecture structures, to help me develop a idea towards my final design.

I've been bending and trying to capture different perspectives with origami, as well as exploring exterior textures. Playing around with origami has allowed me to look at creating shows between my experimentation's.

Different photograph angles, which presents a rhythm with the triangular paper folds.

FMP- Exploring

Here I've been exploring experimenting and challenging the properties of the material that I'm experimenting with. I've tried to explore and create a range of different facades using different materials.

Different perspectives of trying to create a space using paper cupcakes, and also this is inspired by dance costume  tutu.

I've used a toilet roll, I've played around with slitting and trying to create different levels.

Close-up photographs of inside my location

I got the chance to go and explore my site closer because the gates we're open to my site. This gave me a better understand and insight on the size of my location, there's also a benefit of a park being close by my location because on my project proposal I stated that I would also want to design a terrace or an out door area within my theatre and dance studio spaces.
